Ranfurly Library Service

Basic reading books for younger school children and a more limited number of secondary and adult readers are collected, sorted and packed for distribution (by sea) to schools and community libraries throughout PNG and the South West Pacific Region.

Books are collected from schools, libraries and individuals and brought to the depot every Thursday for sorting and packing. Over two million books have been dispatched in 18 years! The service acts as the "book arm" of RAWCS DIK (Donations in Kind). It is supported by clubs from the Sydney Districts as well as other NSW Districts. During the 2004/2005 year the service came under new management (but the reliable "old" faces are still there).Support for Ranfurly means support for literacy - one of RI's priority service areas.

WHAT HELP IS REQUIRED?

  1. 1.The most urgent need is for volunteers to help with the sorting and packing. Currently the volunteer workers operate between 8-30 am and 2-30 pm on Thursdays. There is always good fellowship. Tea and coffee are provided but please bring lunch.
  2. 2.Modest financial support is always needed to pay shipping costs - Please send donations to Rotary/Ranfurly Library Service, PO Box 1159, Rozelle, NSW 2039.

Sydney clubs please encourage volunteers for this very valuable and rewarding project. Volunteers may be able to devote most Thursdays or once a fortnight or even once a month.

Clubs might like to arrange to send a small group of no more than 3 (sorting space is limited) to make a regular team. You are encouraged to come and "have a look" on any Thursday before making a commitment.

  • It is a great opportunity for "hands on service" but it is also enjoyable fellowship. Support can help your club to qualify for a Presidential Citation.

RANFURLY LIBRARY BOOK AID PROJECT - NORTH FLY RIVER:WESTERN PROVINCE PNG.

Books for Schools Initiative - 2009
Introduction

Located in Sydney, Australia, the Rotary Ranfurly Library Service, under the Ranfurly Library Book Aid Project, collects books from Australian schools, libraries and individuals. Books are sorted for primary, secondary and adult students and are packed for distribution to schools and community libraries located throughout the South West Pacific. Since the establishment of this Rotary project, over two million books have been dispatched to needy communities.
In the upper Fly River district, Western Province, Papua New Guinea, there are over 20 government and community schools located along the highway connecting Kiunga and Mt Fubilan. Many of these schools have very limited supplies of reading material / educational books; some have none at all.
Through Rotary International’s generosity, and through OTML’s extensive resources in the WP region, the opportunity exists to potentially make a bit of a difference to the students of these schools.

OTML Sponsor

Through the OTML Donations Committee, OTML has got behind the Rotary Ranfurly Library Service and has kindly covered all shipping costs to deliver a sea container full of books from Sydney, Australia to Tabubil, WP. PNG.
The OTML Books for Schools Initiative plans to distribute the books to several needy schools and communities in the northern Fly region throughout the second half of 2009. Books supplied will be appropriate for all school grades from early childhood reception, through to upper secondary grades.

Book Distribution

Books have been pre-sorted in Australia by Rotary Ranfurly Library Service. OTML through the Books for Schools Initiative has also undertaken some additional sorting to try to ensure the books are (as far as practicable), appropriate to the schools and grades they are supplied to.
OTML personnel will progressively distribute the books during their routine OTML work activities. Initial focus will be upon supplying books to schools/communities that are located between Finalbin and Kiunga along the highway.

PLEASE ENJOY YOUR BOOKS and HAPPY READING !
