The project on Emae Island in Vanuatu is coordinated by Reg Robinson for the Rotary Club of Ingleburn.

The project is a partnership with the people of Emae and while there is much to do to build new classrooms there is another aspect to this project.

It is intended to support the teaching of literacy at the school by:

  • Providing training for teachers.
  • This training will come from the teachers who are a part of or connected to the Rotary Club of Ingleburn.
  • Opportunities will be provided to send practising primary teachers to the island and to bring teachers from the school to Australia to train at Busby West Public School for a week.
  • The writing and publishing of reading materials which relate to the life, customs and history of the people of Vanuatu.

The double classroom commenced by the people of Emae and completed with the assistance of The Rotary Club of Ingleburn

Everything is done by hand – even mixing the concrete for the slab. Here water is being carried from a local water tank to be used in the concrete slab.

THIS IS WHERE WE REALLY NEED TO GO AND NOT JUST IN THIS PROJECT.  OUR ROTARY LITERACY PROJECTS HAVE TO BE ABOUT TRAINING AND PROVIDING LITERACY RESOURCES WHICH ARE APPROPRIATE FOR THE LOCAL PEOPLE AND NOT JUST ARE UNWANTED, IRRELVANT MATERIALS.

Rotary Club of Ingleburn has started this process - however, there is a long way to go yet...
